San Fermo Maggiore - Verona

The church of San Fermo Maggiore in Verona presents a unique example in which the typical Romanesque style of the 10th century merges with the Gothic of the 14th century in the two overlapping churches.

The lower church was built starting in 1065, on the remains of an ancient parish church from the 5th century, dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico who were martyred in this place. The upper church was built in the first decades of the 14th century by the Franciscan friars, who left the Romanesque lower church intact and gave the upper one its current Gothic style, enriching it over the centuries with the original ship's hull ceiling on which various paintings are busts of saints, splendid frescoes by Pisanello, spires and numerous works of art.  The interior of the large upper church, in the shape of a Latin cross, has a single nave with five apses and a series of side altars.

During the restoration works, in addition to reducing the sismic vulnerability, in particular of the inverted hull roofing of the ceiling, the new electrical and lighting system of the upper church was created.
The system uses a sophisticated DALI system, while two types of lamps were used for lighting, placed above cornices, capitals and altars to replace the previous floor lamps or tracks placed on the walls.
The Gemini Plus system was chosen for its small size, but equipped with powerful LEDs, and for the possibility of composing them with more or fewer LEDs if necessary.
The Leo system, a powerful lamp, is also foreseen, necessary to cope with the considerable dimensions of the church.
